Pregnancy   Introduction

How do you get pregnant?

You need to have sexual intercourse to get pregnant. If you don't want to get pregnant, but want to have sex, then you must use a contraceptive method. Visit the Contraception section on the website to find out more.

If you do want to get pregnant, then the girl should take a 400 microgram tablet of Folic Acid every day before she gets pregnant and for the first 12 weeks of her pregnancy. This is to help protect against the baby having health problems. If you don't want to get pregnant, but want to have sex, then you must use a contraceptive method.

How would you know if you were pregnant?

You will miss a period - a few women do continue to bleed during pregnancy so you may also :-

  • Feel or be sick in the morning or at other times
  • Feel tired
  • Have tender breasts
  • Want to pee more
  • Be constipated
  • "Go off" certain foods e.g. tea, coffee

If you think you might be pregnant, you should have a pregnancy test. You can get a free test done in confidence at your GP surgery, your local Family Planning Clinic and at some Voluntary Organisations - see the services directory. You can also buy a pregnancy testing kit from a Chemist and do it yourself. A pack of two tests will cost around £10.
