STIs   Gonorrhoea

What is gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection which can be passed on during sex. It is one of the most common forms of STI and is more serious than people realise. If untreated, it can spread throughout the sex and reproductive organs and cause uncomfortable inflammation.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of gonorrhoea in women are:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Burning feeling when passing urine
  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Irritation or discharge from the opening to the back passage
  • Gonorrhoea passed on during oral sex may cause a sore throat

Most women with gonorrhoea do not have any symptoms at all.

1 in 10 men with gonorrhoea will not have any symptoms. The symptoms in men are:

  • Pain on passing urine
  • Yellow discharge from the penis
  • Irritation and discharge from the anus
  • Gonorrhoea passed on during oral sex may cause a sore throat.

If you think you have gonorrhoea you should attend your local genito-urinary medicine clinic for investigation and an antibiotic can be prescribed which can cure gonorrhoea completely.
