STIs   What do I do now?

If you think you may have got an STI you need to see a doctor who can diagnose and treat your infection. To do this you will need to attend either your GP or (GUM) clinic.

At the GUM clinic you can be assured of confidential and professional treatment. The staff at the clinic are experienced in dealing with STIs and there is no need for any embarrassment. The doctor you see at the clinic will ask you questions about your symptoms, your general health and the type of sex you've been having. You will have a check up which involves the following:

• Examination of the genital area
• Giving a sample of urine, having a blood test
• Samples of discharge may be taken from penis, vagina or anus
• A throat swab may be taken
• Women will have an internal examination so the doctor can take swabs from the cervix (neck of the womb)
